Dragonlance Forums Closing July 25th

Dear friends,

Nearly twenty years ago, the Dragonlance Forums were created to be an online hub of Dragonlance discussion. I have been very proud of the work we have done here.

All good things, though, must come to an end. There are several reasons....

a. No new posts in Novels since March. No new posts in gaming since May. In other words, next to no traffic.

b. Forums are a thing of the past, with a few exceptions (such as the Piazza!). People don't go somewhere looking for content. They want content to come to them.

c. The DL forums are a resource hog. I would have to get much more expensive hosting to keep them online, and that won't come cheap.

d. Maintenance. Honestly, vBulletin is a PITA. There's a major upgrade coming. I don't have the knowledge to tackle this. My son Travis does, but he's busy enough.

e. Currently, the forums are being hosted on a computer in my living room. This computer was at Travis' house, but he's trying to cut down expenses, so the computer came here to get the internet experience they need.

So while I would hate to see the forums go, I have come to realize that what I worked to create was really a community. That community has migrated over to Facebook to the Dragonlance Fandom group, and is something like 7,000 - 8,000 members strong.

With all of that being said, the Dragonlance Forums will close on Sunday, July 25th.

I wanted to say a huge thank you to all the moderators, authors, game designers, and contributors throughout the years.

And as Stan Lee would say...

"Face front, True Believers!"

  • Who is still Active Here? Old and New

    Hi All,

It has been a long time since I have been on the Dragonlance Forum's, looking through everything now I am feeling a bit sad and nostalgic seeing all the old stuff posted the stories we used to write together and all the fun and energy that used to be a part of this site. It also looks like there has been a big downturn of everything around here which is also sad but understandable. Unfortunately, Dragonlance just isn't a bit part of gaming anymore, or even books out there for people to read.

Having been on other roleplaying sites, I have heard a few people talk about Dragonlance in the past tense a lot because I have it as part of my interests on the site. There isn't much excitement or energy out there like it used to be. And really books are so much electronic now that it is easy to skip over stuff when looking for something new to read, where before when you went to the bookstores and looked in the fantasy section there would be a bunch of Dragonlance books in one place which could sometimes catch someone's eye and bring them into the world we all know any love.

So right now I guess I am giving a nudge on here to see who is actually active on the Forums or at least wants to be? Who still sticks there head in over here to see what is going on? So please post to this thread, so maybe can get an idea of who is still around. And if you want to throw in a little something on something you miss doing here, or wish you seen here that couldn't hurt either.

Maybe who ever of us is still around can manage to put our heads together, to get this place a little more active again. Or maybe this is finally run out of energy, and it is just meant to be as it is. I don't know.

So if anything let's get more of an idea?

Yeah, Dragonlance has been dead for awhile now, but we do what we can to keep its memory alive. As for me, I try and stay pretty active around here.

Well a lot of us still visit.

Active is relative. It's really more scattered than anything else. The Forums, and the concept of forums are basically dying in the new internet. I know there are facebook groups, Reddit groups, the Piazza forums, the fanfic.net dragonlance story club, and of course the Nexus.

Nexus folks have got a lot going on. There are articles about the latest 5th edition stuff. Just recently articles were about the Wizards of High Sorcery as a faction.
      There's a livestream of a Dragonlance game.
I recently did a Dragonlancian review of the latest cookbook. I wouldn't mind more people try out recipes and give their opinions. I found the new Otik's skillet fried potatoes to be a bit complex. (you have to find a microwave, and survive using it to warm your potatoes.)

This is all very disheartening to hear. Is there anything we can try to do to get people here again?

I'm not really sure. Advertise? Everyone tell their friends? That sort of thing?

Well, it may be disheartening, but honestly it's par for the course. I've seen the same thing happen to a lot of other dragonlance stuff. Remember when everyone had their own dragonlance website? Remember the Dragonlance Underground? or Usenet Alt.fan.dragonlance? or the Dragonlance mailing list? or TSR message boards? or Dragonlance Myspace pages? Yahoo groups. Google groups. The TSR forums, the TSR Otherworlds forums. Man.... now I feel old. ;-P

DIdn't you used to maintain the AFDL frequently asked questions, Weldon? Or am I confusing you with Falconer and you maintained the unofficial timeline. It gets hard to remember in our old age!

I actually didn't. Cassandra Jacobs was the last maintainer of the Dragonlance Underground, which maintained the FAQ. I previously maintained a dragonlance product's list, but that has passed on to Falconer who now maintains the list (also on the Dragonlance Underground website). Since then Falconer has been helping other sites like the nexus and Fandom wiki with what's out there. I had my timeline which is only available in the archive.org wayback machine.

I didn't know about any of those, to be honest.

                    Look no further

We are dedicated to bringing back Dragonlance and all things Krynn to our RP server. With the announcement of the new Dragonlance novels this is not the challenge it appears to be as our server has experienced a spurt of interest in the past few weeks.

I invite you to our Discord server: https://discord.gg/GhTPHpkybm and for more details see https://nwndragonlance.enjin.com/

We are like-minded roleplayers who galivant with narrative roleplaying and fiction related to Dragonlance and even offer an environment of consisting of news and discussion about our favorite world.

Many of us play as RPers set on a cRPG platform using a "persistent world" placed in Neverwinter Nights. It is only a part of the experience, but has been in place for over 10 years. Still, the numbers are growing for both traditional DL discussion and gaming, come check us out.
